Restoration work for Hotel Chocolat in Canterbury

Finding Uniquely Skilled People

As a building company that specializes in restoration and conservation we are often looking for uniquely skilled people.  One of our recent projects was to restore a fabulous Canterbury Tudor building into an upmarket chocolate shop.  For this project I was looking for traditional skills such as Tudor oak carpentry and lime and horsehair plastering.

Many of these ancient skills are lost or forgotten in today’s building industry and in the past have been difficult to trace.  However, after a quick search of SkillPages I was able to source the expert tradespeople I needed from within the UK.

It was amazing to see that specialists in these techniques are now communicating via SkillPages!

Great Work = More Work

The project was regularly inspected and passed by surveyors and visited by building historians.  All tradesmen worked extremely well as a team and completed the project bang on time.  At the end of the job everyone was rewarded with a feast of some of the best chocolate we had ever tasted!  Afterwards I received a call from the former Head of Conservation at Canterbury City Council praising us for the restoration and repair.  Since then I have been invited to restore a nearby ancient building on the same street.

It’s wonderful to be able to utilize these age old skills towards preserving our historic environment.  I will definitely continue to use Skillpages as there is no better way of sourcing highly experienced experts in traditional ancient building techniques in the world.
